Wizz Air said no to your compensation claim
Updated
Your Wizz Air flight from Oslo, Bergen, Copenhagen, Billund, Stockholm, Malmö, Turku or another Nordic airport was delayed or cancelled, and Wizz Air rejected your claim or did not answer. A rejection is not a ruling. Wizz Air has to prove its reason.
We are not affiliated with Wizz Air and do not act for Wizz Air.
Which rules apply to Wizz Air
Wizz Air flies under three companies, shown by the flight number:
- W6, Wizz Air Hungary: the main airline, an EU carrier.
- W4, Wizz Air Malta: also an EU carrier.
- W9, Wizz Air UK: a UK carrier, not an EU one.
For a flight departing a Nordic airport, the company does not matter: Regulation 261/2004 covers every flight leaving the EU or EEA. On a flight into the Nordics from outside the EU, only W6 and W4 are covered. Compensation is €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, depending on distance.
What Wizz Air says, and what the rules say back
Wizz Air's EC261 page lists air traffic control, weather, industrial action, terrorist alerts and airport closure as extraordinary circumstances. A reason on a list is not proof for your flight.
- The airline must prove it. Extraordinary circumstances are read narrowly and the burden of proof is on the airline (Wallentin-Hermann C-549/07).
- Industrial action by the airline's own staff over pay or conditions is not extraordinary (Airhelp v SAS C-28/20). See strike cancellation.
- ATC and weather are often accepted as events, but the airline must also show what it did to get you there, including on other airlines (LE v TAP C-74/19). See ATC restrictions.
- Technical faults are part of normal operations (van der Lans C-257/14). A hidden design defect that existed at the time and that the airline could not detect or control can be extraordinary (Matkustaja A v Finnair C-385/23). In 2024 Wizz Air grounded hundreds of aircraft over Pratt & Whitney engine faults, so ask for the technical log. See technical faults.
Rerouting and expenses. In July 2023 the UK Civil Aviation Authority took enforcement action over complaints that Wizz Air was not paying what passengers were owed, especially for rerouting after cancellations. If you paid for a replacement flight, a transfer or a hotel, claim it with receipts on top of the fixed compensation.
How to claim from Wizz Air
- Where: Wizz Air's EC261 page points to its online complaints form, which is the airline's own claim form.
- Answer time: Wizz Air says it responds within 30 days.
- Deadline: Wizz Air gives none. National limits apply; see EU261 time limits in the Nordics.
- Claim yourself first. Wizz Air will not process a third party's claim unless a passenger has first claimed directly, and it deducts a €50 "Assignment Administration Fee" from assigned claims. Claiming yourself keeps the full amount.
- Vouchers: compensation is paid in money; a voucher replaces it only with your signed agreement (Article 7(3)). See voucher instead of compensation.
Does Wizz Air follow the boards?
Often not. The Swedish magazine Råd & Rön lists companies that ignore decisions from Sweden's consumer board ARN:
- September 2017: Wizz Air was worst on the list, with 18 cases and 83,000 SEK recommended by ARN (SVT).
- March 2024: 4th of 12 companies, with 14 cases and 135,525 SEK.
- August 2025: 9 cases, tied with Lufthansa.
In Norway, a 2013 Consumer Council review found Wizz Air most often ignored Transportklagenemnda's decisions. Build your file as if a judge will read it.
Step by step
- Reply to Wizz Air in writing, in English. Claim the amount per passenger and ask for the delay code and the evidence behind its reason.
- Wait for the answer: about 4 weeks in Sweden and Norway, 6 weeks in Denmark. See airline not responding.
- Go to the board for the country where the disruption happened. Wizz Air is based in Hungary, so in Finland contact ECC Finland before KRIL. In Sweden, ARN may decline a non-resident's complaint about a non-Swedish airline; then use the ECC in your own country. Transportklagenemnda takes any flight to, from or within Norway, via www.reiselivsforum.no, in Norwegian or English. In Denmark, use Trafikstyrelsen with MitID. See the Nordic complaint boards.
- Court if Wizz Air ignores the decision. You can sue where the flight departed or arrived (Rehder C-204/08).
When it is worth it, and when not
Strong: technical faults, Wizz Air staff strikes, weather or ATC without evidence for your flight, and rerouting or hotel costs with receipts.
Weaker: a documented air traffic control strike that hit every airline, where you were rebooked quickly. Not sure? Try the rejection checker.
Appeal My Flight writes the reply to Wizz Air and the board complaint for €29 per booking, however many passengers. You send it yourself and keep the payout. We cannot promise an outcome.
FAQ
Wizz Air has not answered after 30 days. What now?
Send a written reminder, then go to the board once your country's waiting period has passed.
Can a friend on the same booking claim for me?
Yes. Wizz Air accepts claims from another passenger on the same booking, with proof that you authorised it.
My flight number started with W9. Am I covered?
Yes, if the flight departed from a Nordic or other EU/EEA airport. If it flew from the UK, UK rules apply instead.
