Eurowings said no to your compensation claim

Updated

Your Eurowings flight from Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø or another Nordic airport was delayed or cancelled, and Eurowings rejected your claim or did not answer. A rejection is not a ruling. Eurowings has to prove its reason, and the EU Court has already ruled against it on strikes.

We are not affiliated with Eurowings and do not act for Eurowings.

Which rules apply to Eurowings

The airline is Eurowings GmbH, a German company based in Cologne and part of the Lufthansa group. It is an EU airline, so Regulation 261/2004 covers every Eurowings flight from or to the EU or EEA, including Norway. Compensation is €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, depending on distance.

Eurowings opened a base at Stockholm Arlanda in 2022 and has flown from Oslo, Bergen and Tromsø to German cities. Eurowings Discover is a separate airline in the Lufthansa group. The airline that operated your flight pays (Article 3(5)), so check the flight number.

What Eurowings says, and what the rules say back

Strikes. Eurowings pilots joined the Vereinigung Cockpit strike on 13 April 2026, in a dispute over the pension offer. Anadolu Agency reported that Eurowings was hit too, with all departures from German airports cancelled that Monday. A strike by the airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance (Airhelp v SAS C-28/20). The EU Court said the same in a Eurowings case about its staff striking in solidarity with staff at the parent company (CS v Eurowings C-613/20). See strike cancellation.

"We did not operate that flight" on a package holiday. Eurowings has gone to the EU Court over flights sold by tour operators, and lost on the main points. A tour operator's documents can give you a confirmed reservation, and Eurowings can be the operating airline even if it never confirmed the times to you. The scheduled times can be taken from the tour operator's documents, and a flight brought forward by more than one hour counts as cancelled (Azurair and Others C-146/20, which includes the Eurowings case C-196/20). Eurowings is not the operating airline for a flight number and date it never scheduled (Eurowings v Flightright C-607/22). See charter flight delay compensation.

Damage on the runway. In a Germanwings case, tyre damage from debris on the runway was extraordinary, but the airline still had to prove it used all its resources to avoid the long delay (Germanwings v Pauels C-501/17).

Technical faults are part of normal operations (van der Lans C-257/14). See technical fault.

Its own terms. In 2026 a Vienna commercial court declared nine Eurowings terms invalid, including a mere "effort" to tell passengers about schedule changes and refunds cut by unspecified fees (news.at, October 2026). Terms cannot limit your EU261 rights anyway (Article 15).

How to claim from Eurowings

Use the airline's own claim form. The site blocks automated checks, so we could not read the form ourselves. Claim the full amount per passenger in money. A voucher replaces money only with your signed agreement (Article 7(3)). See voucher instead of compensation.

If the disruption happened in Germany, Eurowings names the Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr in Berlin as the conciliation body for private travellers. You can go there when Eurowings has not answered within two months, or you could not agree. For deadlines, see EU261 time limits in the Nordics.

Does Eurowings follow the boards?

Not always. Råd & Rön's black list of companies that did not follow Sweden's consumer board ARN listed Eurowings with 11 cases about delays and cancelled flights in November 2025, with SEK 41,778 recommended in total. The full list from August 2026 is behind a paywall, so we do not know the current figure.

In a 2022 Norwegian case about a broken seat (not EU261), neither Eurowings nor Eurowings Discover answered the board's letters. Build your file as if a judge will read it.

Step by step

  1. Reply to Eurowings in writing, in English. Claim the amount per passenger and ask for the delay reason and the evidence behind it.
  2. Wait for the answer: about 4 weeks in Sweden and Norway, 6 weeks in Denmark. See airline not responding.
  3. Go to the board for the country where the disruption happened. Eurowings is based in Germany, so in Finland contact ECC Finland before KRIL. In Sweden, ARN may decline a non-resident's complaint about a non-Swedish airline; then use the ECC in your own country. Transportklagenemnda takes any flight to, from or within Norway, via www.reiselivsforum.no, in Norwegian or English. In Denmark, use Trafikstyrelsen with MitID. See the Nordic complaint boards.
  4. Court if Eurowings ignores the decision.

When it is worth it, and when not

Strong: the April 2026 pilots' strike or any other strike by Eurowings staff, technical faults, a flight brought forward by more than an hour, and "not our flight" on a package holiday Eurowings actually flew.

Weaker: a strike by air traffic controllers or airport staff not employed by Eurowings, where you were rebooked quickly. Not sure? Try the rejection checker.

Appeal My Flight writes the reply to Eurowings and the board complaint for €29 per booking, however many passengers. You send it yourself and keep the payout. We cannot promise an outcome.

FAQ

My Eurowings flight was cancelled in the April 2026 strike. Am I owed compensation?

Usually yes, if Eurowings told you less than 14 days ahead. A strike by its own pilots is not an extraordinary circumstance.

I booked a package holiday and Eurowings says it has no booking for me. What now?

Send Eurowings your tour operator's documents with the flight times. The EU Court has held that these can give you a confirmed reservation.

Is Eurowings Discover the same as Eurowings?

No. Eurowings Discover is a separate airline in the Lufthansa group. Claim from the airline that operated your flight.
